Glutathione Infusion in Dublin: A Doctor's Guide to IV Glutathione Therapy

Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. Delivered by IV, it is used to support detoxification, skin clarity and cellular health. Here is how the treatment works, who it suits and how we keep it safe at our Tallaght clinic.

What an IV glutathione infusion is, the evidence behind it, the blood tests we check first, and who it may suit — explained by our doctors in Dublin 24.

Glutathione is a naturally occurring antioxidant produced by your liver from three amino acids — glutamine, glycine and cysteine. A glutathione infusion delivers it directly into the bloodstream, which allows for faster and more complete absorption than tablets taken by mouth.

At Dr. Torun's Clinic in Tallaght, Dublin 24, every glutathione infusion is assessed and supervised by a doctor. This guide explains what the treatment involves, the evidence behind it, and the checks we carry out to keep it safe.

What Is a Glutathione Infusion?

Glutathione is often described as the body's "master antioxidant" because of the role it plays in neutralising free radicals and supporting the liver's detoxification pathways. Given by intravenous (IV) infusion, it bypasses the gut and enters the bloodstream directly.

It is used in a range of settings — from wellness and dermatology clinics to selected medical contexts, including as an adjunct in certain liver and neurological conditions. It is also widely requested for skin brightening, anti-ageing and general "detox" support.

Medical and Wellness Uses

Glutathione infusions are given for a number of reasons, including:

  • Liver conditions such as fatty liver disease or hepatitis
  • Neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease
  • Conditions associated with high oxidative stress
  • As an adjunct in selected oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, to help reduce toxicity
  • Cosmetic skin lightening, improved skin clarity and anti-ageing
  • General wellness and reported improvements in energy

It is important to be honest about the evidence. The antioxidant and liver-support roles of glutathione are well recognised, while some of the cosmetic and wellness claims are supported by more limited evidence. We will always discuss what is realistic for you before you commit to treatment.

Blood Tests Before Your Infusion

Because glutathione is processed by the liver and kidneys, we may ask for some basic safety bloods before treatment:

  • Liver function tests (LFTs) — ALT, AST and bilirubin
  • Kidney function tests (KFTs) — creatinine and urea
  • Complete blood count (CBC)

Depending on your history, we may also check glucose or HbA1c, electrolytes, viral markers (in a liver-disease context) and G6PD levels, which help reduce the risk of haemolysis in susceptible patients.

Benefits

Evidence-supported and commonly reported benefits include:

  • A powerful antioxidant effect that helps reduce oxidative stress
  • Support for the liver's natural detoxification pathways
  • A possible role in immune function (evidence is limited)
  • Skin brightening, improved skin clarity and anti-ageing effects
  • Increased energy levels

Risks and Considerations

Glutathione is generally well tolerated when given correctly, but no infusion is completely without risk. Points to be aware of include:

  • Allergic reactions (rare but possible)
  • Strain on the kidneys or liver if used improperly
  • A risk of infection if the infusion is not carried out safely
  • Overuse potentially disrupting your natural antioxidant balance

This is why we only provide glutathione infusions in a clinical setting, with proper assessment and monitoring.

Who May Need This Drip?

A glutathione infusion may be considered for:

  • Patients with chronic liver disease, such as fatty liver disease or hepatitis
  • Patients with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's disease
  • Patients with conditions associated with increased oxidative stress
  • Selected oncology patients receiving chemotherapy, as an adjunctive treatment
  • Individuals seeking cosmetic skin-lightening or wellness treatments, where clinically appropriate

Our Approach at Dr. Torun's Clinic

We take a doctor-led, assessment-first approach. Before any glutathione drip, you will have a consultation to review your history, discuss your goals and confirm the treatment is appropriate. You are monitored throughout, and we will be honest about what the evidence does and does not support.

Frequently asked questions

A glutathione infusion delivers glutathione — a powerful antioxidant made naturally by the liver — directly into the bloodstream through an IV drip. This allows faster and more complete absorption than tablets. At Dr. Torun's Clinic it is given in a clinical setting under medical supervision.
