A balanced guide to the Myers Cocktail IV drip in Dublin: ingredients, evidence, who it suits and what to expect at our Tallaght clinic.
What Is the Myers Cocktail?
The Myers Cocktail is an intravenous infusion of vitamins and minerals first developed by the American physician Dr. John Myers in the 1960s. It was popularised in the 1990s by Dr. Alan Gaby, and it is now offered by clinics around the world as a general wellbeing drip.
A typical Myers Cocktail contains:
- Magnesium: supports muscle function and energy metabolism
- B-complex vitamins: B5, B6 and B12 in particular
- Vitamin C: at moderate, well-tolerated doses
- Saline base: to deliver the vitamins safely intravenously
The exact formulation varies between clinics. At Dr. Torun’s Clinic the dose is decided by a doctor at the start of each session.
What the Evidence Says
Let’s be honest: the Myers Cocktail has a fan base, but the published evidence is limited. There are small clinical studies suggesting modest short-term benefit for conditions like fibromyalgia and migraine, but high-quality, large-scale trials are scarce.
What we tell our patients:
If you have specific symptoms, the right starting point is a proper assessment, not a drip.
Who Is It Suitable For?
The Myers Cocktail is most popular with adults who:
- Want a "topping up" feeling during a busy period
- Have a busy travel or work schedule
- Are recovering from a viral illness or jet lag
- Are looking for a wellness boost ahead of a sport or event
- Want hydration plus vitamins in a single session
It is not suitable for:
- People with significant kidney disease
- People with known allergy to any component
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding (we offer alternatives in these cases)
- Anyone hoping to use IV therapy in place of a proper medical workup for symptoms
What Happens During Your Appointment
- Brief consultation. Your doctor reviews your medical history, current medications, allergies and what you want from the drip.
- Cannula. A small cannula is placed, usually on the back of the hand. You will feel a brief pinch.
- Infusion. The drip runs over 30-45 minutes. Most patients read, scroll or rest. Some doze off.
- Aftercare. You can return to normal activities immediately. We recommend drinking water for the rest of the day. A small number of patients report mild flushing or a metallic taste during the infusion, both of which settle quickly.
Blood Tests We May Check First
Because the Myers Cocktail contains several vitamins and minerals, a little screening helps us keep it safe and appropriate. Depending on your history, we may check:
- Complete blood count (CBC)
- Kidney function: creatinine and urea
- Electrolytes: particularly calcium and magnesium
Where relevant, we may also look at vitamin B12, vitamin D, serum magnesium and liver function. In many healthy adults requesting a one-off wellness drip, extensive testing is not needed, but we will tell you if it is.
Risks and Considerations
The Myers Cocktail is well tolerated by most people, but it is still a medical treatment. Points to be aware of include:
- Electrolyte imbalance, particularly involving magnesium or calcium
- Allergic reactions to a component
- Over-supplementation or vitamin toxicity with frequent, repeated use
More is not better with vitamins. We space treatments sensibly and will never encourage unnecessary repeat infusions.
How the Myers Compares to Our Other IV Drips
- [Hydration Therapy](/services/hydration-therapy): straightforward saline with optional B vitamins, for dehydration, jet lag and hangover recovery
- [Vitamin C Drip](/services/vitamin-c-drips): higher-dose vitamin C for immune support and skin health
- [Glutathione Drip](/services/glutathione-drip): antioxidant focus, popular for skin
- [Iron IV Drips](/services/iron-iv-drips): a medical treatment for diagnosed iron deficiency, not a wellness drip
- [NAD Drip](/services/nad-drip): for cellular energy and metabolic support
If you are unsure which one is right for you, our GP consultation is the best starting point.
