What is an anti-ageing infusion?

Common ingredients may include vitamin C, B-complex vitamins (especially B12 and B6), magnesium, zinc, glutathione (an antioxidant), amino acids and, occasionally, NAD+, though the evidence for anti-ageing benefits is still limited.

It is important to be clear from the outset: there is good evidence for IV therapy mainly when someone has a diagnosed deficiency or cannot absorb nutrients normally. Where that is not the case, the benefit of an "anti-ageing" drip is likely to be modest and largely subjective. We see it as a complement to the fundamentals of healthy ageing, not a replacement for them.

Benefits

Where deficiencies are corrected, people may experience increased energy, improved fatigue, better cognitive function (if they were B12 deficient), improved muscle function, better immune function, correction of dehydration and improved wound healing in deficiency states. Some people also report feeling refreshed, better exercise recovery, improved skin appearance and better hydration.

Who may need this drip?

Such as vitamin B12, vitamin C or magnesium (severe iron deficiency needs its own specific IV iron therapy)

Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease, short bowel syndrome, or after bariatric surgery

Certain chemotherapy regimens, severe infections, major burns, some chronic illnesses

Before your infusion

Blood tests before your infusion

Testing depends on your symptoms, age, medical history and the planned infusion. A clinician typically considers:

  • Complete blood count (CBC): for anaemia or infection
  • Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP): kidney and liver function, and electrolytes
  • Kidney function: creatinine and eGFR, for safe fluid administration
  • Electrolytes: sodium, potassium and magnesium
  • Vitamin B12 and folate: to detect deficiency
  • Iron studies: ferritin, iron and transferrin saturation
  • Vitamin D: a common deficiency
  • Zinc and copper: when deficiency is suspected
  • Blood glucose or HbA1c: diabetes screening
  • Thyroid function (TSH, with Free T4 if needed): for fatigue evaluation
  • Lipid profile: cardiovascular risk
  • G6PD level: before higher-dose vitamin C in at-risk individuals
  • Pregnancy test: when appropriate

Additional tests may include homocysteine and methylmalonic acid (for B12 status). Hormone testing (testosterone, oestrogen, progesterone or DHEA-S) is only done when there are specific symptoms, and should not be carried out routinely simply because an infusion is marketed as "anti-ageing".

When there is good evidence

An anti-ageing or nutrient infusion is most appropriate when there is a genuine clinical reason. Possible candidates include:

  • People with documented nutrient deficiencies: for example vitamin B12, vitamin C or magnesium deficiency. Severe iron deficiency requires its own specific IV iron therapy.
  • People with absorption disorders: such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease, short bowel syndrome, or after bariatric surgery.
  • People receiving treatments that increase nutritional needs: certain chemotherapy regimens, severe infections, major burns or some chronic illnesses.
  • Selected older adults: some older adults with poor nutrition, frailty or specific deficiencies may benefit, but only after medical evaluation.

Risks and considerations

Anti-ageing infusions are generally well tolerated, but no infusion is without risk. Less common but more serious risks include allergic reactions, fluid overload, electrolyte disturbances, kidney injury in susceptible individuals and heart rhythm disturbances.

Specific points to be aware of:

  • High-dose vitamin C: can increase the risk of kidney stones in people with kidney problems, and can cause haemolysis in people with G6PD deficiency.
  • Magnesium: in excess, may cause low blood pressure, a slowed heart rate or muscle weakness.

Extra caution is warranted in people with chronic kidney disease, heart failure, severe liver disease, pregnancy (unless medically indicated), uncontrolled high blood pressure, a history of severe allergic reactions, G6PD deficiency (before higher-dose vitamin C) and haemochromatosis (where unnecessary iron should be avoided).

Our approach at Dr. Torun's Clinic

We start with an honest conversation and, where appropriate, blood tests, because the best results come from correcting a genuine deficiency rather than treating a marketing label. If an anti-ageing drip is right for you, it is delivered under medical supervision with monitoring throughout.

FAQ

Anti-Aging FAQs.

What is an anti-ageing infusion?

Anti-ageing infusion is a broad marketing term rather than a recognised medical treatment. It usually means an IV mix of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants claimed to support healthy ageing, energy or skin. Ingredients vary widely between clinics and there is no single standard formula. At Dr. Torun's Clinic it is doctor-prescribed with honest advice.

Does an anti-ageing drip actually work?

There is good evidence for IV nutrient therapy mainly when someone has a diagnosed deficiency or cannot absorb nutrients normally. If your levels are normal, the benefit is likely to be modest and largely subjective. We see it as a complement to sun protection, sleep, not smoking, regular activity and a good diet, not a replacement.

What is in an anti-ageing IV drip?

Common ingredients include vitamin C, B-complex vitamins (especially B12 and B6), magnesium, zinc, glutathione, amino acids and occasionally NAD+. The exact blend and doses are decided by a doctor based on your needs and history.

Do I need blood tests first?

Usually, depending on your symptoms and history. Useful tests include a full blood count, kidney and liver function, electrolytes, vitamin B12 and folate, iron studies, vitamin D and thyroid function, plus a G6PD level before higher-dose vitamin C. Hormone tests are only done when symptoms suggest a specific need, not routinely.

How is it different from the glutathione or vitamin C drip?

The anti-ageing infusion is an all-in-one antioxidant and nutrient blend, whereas a dedicated glutathione drip focuses on skin brightening and a high-dose vitamin C infusion focuses on immune and antioxidant support. We will help you choose the most appropriate option at your consultation.
